<image:title>Blog - “La vida es un carnaval” - 2025 marks 10 years of living in San Francisco for me.</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s the longest place I’ve ever lived in, and that felt weighty and worth honoring in some way. At my bookclub’s annual vision board session at the beginning of the year, I cut out a passista and pasted her to my vision board. 2025 would also be the year, I was going to commit to 1) Samba and 2) a contingency to dance with and 3) dance in San Francisco’s Carnaval, the largest multicultural celebration on the West Coast.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - A North Beach Afternoon - Lights on Grant Ave. North Beach, San Francisco, CA. 5:57 am</image:title>
<image:caption>North Beach is special for many reasons: it abuts our famous Chinatown, it’s also the epicenter for the City’s rich literary history having been home to many of the Beat generation. It’s also home to San Francisco’s Little Italy neighborhood and subsequently a plethora of Italian restaurants. So naturally, when I visit this neighborhood, I go to an Irish bar: Maggie McGarry’s, home of the Bay Area Gooners where we ritually watch Arsenal Football Club. Premier League matches take place in England and usually happen (hella early!) in the morning. After a recent “late” match (a 9:30 am start time), I decided to walk around and see the shops and restaurants that make up the neighborhood at decent hours.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Hole in the Wall Coffee This hole in the wall is exactly the kind of coffee shop I’d patronize if I were visiting a different city. Ordering a pour over is only part of the charm, the people watching is top tier. From fellow Arsenal supporters looking for a steadying cup after a frustrating draw, to neighbors who seemingly frequent the joint, Hole in the Wall Coffee is available as a lo-fi option for a high caffeine fix or a coconut should you need one. The menu lists bean options from lightest to darkest. I ordered a “North Beach” and was pleased with the quality and taste. I took my cup and strolled through Washington Square Park to my next destination. Oh! Don’t let the sign fool you-Hole in the Wall is only open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - A Review of Little Rot - I was so excited to get an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) (thanks Riverhead!) of their latest novel Little Rot and to dive in. No idea of the plot, just vibes and an abiding admiration for this free ass spirit artist having a human experience.</image:title>
<image:caption>Little Rot is a story that requires the reader to look at the barely hidden depravity, some real and some as defined by a repressive culture, that makes up our society and culture, or specifically this fictional city in Nigeria. The plot takes place over a weekend just after a couple, Aima (who is PRESSED to get married after having moved to Nigeria from the States) and Kalu have split after many years. Kalu visits a sex party hosted by his (morally corrupt, trifling, international man of mystery) best friend since grade school Ahmed and what he sees there compels him to make a decision that diminishes him. Ola and Souraya are two sex workers who wind up in the midst of this mess and the reader is also dragged down into the mud with these characters navigating a nightmarish reality where money and might make right and compassion results in punishment. I didn’t enjoy this book. As I mentioned, I went into this story with no clue. I sincerely wish I had had a content warning about sexual violence in the book as it was too much. I left the novel feeling dirty and questioning why I felt compelled to finish it. I don’t believe that characters in a novel need to bestow moral lessons or even that everything I read needs a happy ending, but this felt like being shown the ugliness of the world for the sake of it and the plot, thin as it was, didn’t justify the actions. I might have appreciated the story more if Ola and/or Souraya were the protagonists, but that’s not the book we have. I didn’t think the story had anything interesting to say about people repressing their sexuality or religious hypocrites or gender roles or sex or so many topics that a skilled writer like Emezi is capable of in artful ways and that’s a shame. There are beautiful sentences, because if there’s one thing Akwaeke is going to do it’s write a beautiful, descriptive sentence, but the pervasiveness ugliness of this story is what has stayed with me about this novel.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - What’s the best meal you’ve ever had? - We started with the acarajé.</image:title>
<image:caption>Acarajé reminded me of hushpuppies. I don’t need to have a cultural reference for the food I eat when travelling, but it’s always nice to be reminded of my place in a Diaspora of survivors, dreamers, and creators. They are essentially black eyed pea fritters with a direct line to West Africa with a delicious paste and little shrimp on top. In addition to being delicious, Acarajé represent economic freedom and opportunity as they were sold by enslaved Afro Brazilian women to “earn” their freedom and then by formerly enslaved Afro Brazilian women in Bahia state, a region in northern Brazil with the country’s biggest black population.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - What’s the best meal you’ve ever had? - Abundance from the sea</image:title>
<image:caption>Moqueca de frutos do mar de Dona Lô (Camarão, Polvo, Lula, Mexilhões, marisco e sururu) (right) This dish reminded me of paella and was super flavorful. The rice was almost risotto where paella is a little drier. Peixe a Inajá – Peixe em espelhado de moqueca de camarões, capitão, arroz de coco, com queijo coalho e banana da terra. (left and bottom center) I thought the rice (bottom center) we ordered was coconut and plantain rice, instead of a savory bite, I was greeted with a sweetness I wasn’t expecting. It’s sweetness offset the savory flavors of the sauce the fish was in and was perfect. Practically diving. Both dishes were amazing, but we easily could have split them. I wish we had had room for dessert, but alas. Our waiter was lovely and was able to communicate with me in French. They also had an English menu that you could use to point to, if needed, but their menu in Portuguese is beautiful-kudos to the designer!</image:caption>

<image:caption>If you are one of the many Americans went got into the beautiful game because of Ted Lasso, welcome. I enjoyed season 1 and it came at a time when I, and many others, needed light and good fun. If you are a Ted Lasso fan, you might as well take a trip to visit Richmond and experience the quaint cuteness of the area.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Mam Papaul's King Cake Mix served me well and allowed me to share an aspect of my life and identity with friends in San Francisco. When my King Cakes finally arrived from New Orleans on that Monday, I made my husband bring it to his big law firm and saved the rest for a weekend in Tahoe with our crew of friends. We ate that King Cake for breakfast, snacks, and dessert before it finally gave up the ghost or we quit. I got to see the joy when a friend, whose job required him to vigorously track the impending crisis, found the baby, his genuine sadness when he lost it, and the glee when he retrieved it from an untimely and unlucky near demise in the garbage disposal. What a trip.</image:caption>

COYG and Visca Barça!</image:title>
<image:caption>J/K I fell in love with this handsome man, his talent, and our coach, Arsène Wenger. When Henry left for Barcelona, I added on this second club and haven’t looked back since. I love watching soccer and the World Cup is THE event. Arguably the world’s most watched event. For me and so many other football fans, I can mark the seasons of my life by the tournament:</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Will the real [Séra] please stand up? - To say I enjoyed The Eternal Audience of One x Rémy Ngamije would be an understatement. It’s a beautiful coming-of-age story about Séraphin or Séra who is That Guy. He’s got the looks, wit, and swagger that attracts everyone to him: the epitome of Black cool, but like everyone he contains multitudes. He’s on the precipice of real adulthood, trying to figure out what to do after uni in South Africa and struggling with his duty to his family and his immigrant community, his presumed duty to a sort of friend, the young women he woos, and himself. When he leaves uni for break, he’s back in his close-knit Rwandan immigrant community in Namibia and missing his large, diverse group of friends from throughout Africa who tolerate and instigate his bravado and feed off of his shenanigans. The group is but one of his many audiences. T hroughout The Eternal Audience of One I couldn’t help but think of this quote from RuPaul, “We’re all born naked and the rest is drag.” Séra is always performing either as dutiful son, smug older brother, easy lover, class clown, creative, or any other dozen of roles. I kept reflecting on my own performances that help me navigate the world a little easier as a Black American woman. Rémy (we’re not on a first-name basis, but I feel like we’re Francophone cousins) does a really beautiful job sharing Séra’s interior life-something that young Black men don’t always get to see in popular culture-and exposing the vulnerability behind the necessary (?) cool wall. As an added bonus, I loved the moment's when Séra was surprised by other characters dropping their cool and letting him in.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - A Late Summer Update - I experienced it from Faith’s friend Lolá Ákínmádé Åkerström who gave us all the tea and wisdom on how she approaches storytelling and narrative broadening. Her debut novel “In Every Mirror She’s Black” is out on September 7th. I preordered while she was talking to her class and Bookshop delivered it last week! I can’t wait to dig in. I observed it again from Bani Amor’s willingness to also teach a lesson and then when life changed those plans, followed up to reschedule with our cohort and also generously shared their time. Check out their upcoming Decolonizing Travel Culture at Atlas Obscura. This experience has once again reminded me that when institutions fail us, we have to rely on individuals and specifically the trust and love that we cultivate with these individuals. After this experience I keep trying to ask myself, how do I show up for my growing writer community and how can I keep showing up for myself? I haven’t made as much progress on my bookish resolutions (a post for another day), but I’m proud and more importantly thankful for the moments where my intention has been rewarded. Here’s to prioritizing more experiences that bring me closer to my dreams.</image:title>

<image:caption>Nevertheless, I shot my shot and couldn’t really believe that I was accepted. This doubt has a lot to do with me trying to claim my identity as a writer and knowing that I don’t take my practice as seriously as I should or could. Being accepted to participate in this community of writers of color felt like an affirmation from the universe that I was good enough, or at least worthy of the pursuit of good enough.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - 12 Cookbooks for you to check out</image:title>
<image:caption>In January, I decided that I wanted to cook 12 recipes from 12 new-to-me cookbooks. I was rocking and rolling and then the world turned upside down. Somewhere in September (honestly, what to months mean anymore?) I remembered this desire and got to work. Yesterday, I completed my 12th recipe with the Sweet Potato Honey Beer Pie from Nik Sharma’s The Flavor Equation. Cookbooks in order (you can find the cookbooks and recipes I made on IG under my “Cookbooks” highlight. Nadiya’s British Food Adventures: Over 120 Fresh, Easy and Enticing New Recipes x Nadiya Hussain Jubilee x Toni Tipton-Martin (Instant classic. I LOVE how Tipton-Martin weaves history all throughout and let’s us know how integral Black chefs are to American cuisine. Love it.) Dinner in French x Melissa Clark The Full Plate x Ayesha Curry (Would highly recommend this for cooking chill, delicious food.) Zaitoun x Yasmin Khan ( I LOVE this cookbook. I’ve already made 2 recipes from it and can’t wait to work my way through more of it. Shoutout to my best friend who bought me my own copy after seeing how much I loved the electronic book I checked out from my library.) Parwana: Recipes and stories from an Afghan kitchen x Durkhanai Ayubi Drinking French x David Lebovitz East x Meera Sodha Nopalito: A Mexican Kitchen x Gonzalo Guzmán and Stacy Adimando Tartine All Day x Elisabeth Pruett Mixtape Potluck x ?uestlove and Friends (I’ll definitely be buying this. I love ?uestlove’s interdisciplinary mindset and how he weaves all of his passions together. Also, shoutout to him for being an Aquarius.) The Flavor Equation: The Science of Great Cooking Explained in More Than 100 Essential Recipes x Nik Sharma</image:caption>
